 | Aslamoalikum Dr Qamar Zaman: I have come some questions which I want to ask regarding Chapter 27 that is Soreh Namal.
I am giving my questions below in comments |
 | Comments by: ali.haideer On Sunday, July 18, 2010 | Report Abuse | |
| 1. The first thing is that what is the meaning of NAMAL?
*Some have said this name was attributed to a valley, some has said that it means Ants as in 27:18 the word has been translated in to the meaning of Ants.(Page 219, Lughatul Quran by Naeemudin Siddique also states Namal means ants)
2. What is the purpose of telling us these stories?
*In this chapter we have been told the stories of Mosses, Suleman and Suleh. In this era what purpose these stories can serve? As any body who is admitting Islam today and start quran or a muslim is reading quran what he will understand. We can learn lesson from things which happen before us, these events happened 100s of years ago, these will not be lesson for us today? Even many people say that these are the Hypothetical stories. What should we reply to them.
3. In verse 16 it is given that Suleman said we have been taught the language of birds. What is the exact translation of this verse? Becaase its very difficult to believe that some one understands birds.
*The words used in the verse are (Ulema Mantika Tera) and at several places in Quran the word ter has been translated as birds just like in 24:11 and Naeemudin Siddique in Lughatul Quran has given the meaning as Birds. Please clear this word and the meaning of the verse.
4. In verse 17 it is given that Soleman gathered soliders of Jinns, Men and BIRDS.
*Again the word Tere(Birds) creats a problem.
5. 27:20 the character Hud hud(Hoopoe) has been defiend as Bird by some of the translators and some says that he was the solider of the Soleman. How to decide exactly who was Hud Hud?
6. 27:23 has been translated as "Men ne daikha us mulk par aik malika hukumran hai jis k pas sab kuch ha.Aur us ka androni nazmo nask aur control bhe bara azemo shan hai." By G. A Perveez
OR
"Indeed I found a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne."
The question is that when the state of Saba was happy they were having each and every thing what was the reason to impose war on them? Although my question has been answered in 27:24 but that answer seems to be totally illogical and I think that is the mis interpretation of 27:24.
27:24 is translated as: "I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of God and satan has mad their deeds pleasing to them and everted them from His way so they are not guided". Nearly same translation has been given by G.A Perveez.
*The question is that:is it fair to impose war just because of the reason that some one is not prostrating God? The answers given on aastana blog relating to this topic contradicts with this thing. What is the exact translation, meaning and explanation of this verse? If we say that it was the ideology they were following not just rutials but even if it was ideology but the state was prosperous than why did they impose war? Even this idea that they were prasing Sun and due to this Soleman impose war is against the Quranic verse which says " LA IKRA FID DEIN".
*Please solve the issue of great throne(arshun azeem) as well.
7. 27:25-26 has defined the dignity of God.
*My question is that if it is ok not to believe in God and following an ideology that brings prosperty in the society than why such verses has been given in the quran? there was an answer on the blog that people who don't believe in God if they are doing good deeds they will go to jana, than the Saba's state was properous but they were not believing in God but Soleman imposed war than how do you say that non believers will go in Jana? and also that how can we say that it is ok to follow any ideology which can bring peace?
8. In 27:31 Soleman says " be not haughty with me but come to me in submission as muslims."
*We know through the verse 27:23 that the state was prosperous and through the verse 27:24 and 31 that they were not following the divine revelation/they were not believers. Is it possible to bring peace in the world w/o following divine revalation? The answer in the perspective of these verses is surely yes, than why we all are learning Quran? If peace and prosperity is possible by the man made rules that why did God descended revalations?
9. In 27:37 Soleman said "we will surely expel them therefrom in humilation and they will be debased".
*The previous verses show that the people of saba got prosperity b/c of there own struggle but the reason they wre non believers Soleman is going to impose war to expel them in humilation, is it fair??? Are prophets coming for these things? He is going to start war in a place where there is already peace.
10. 27:38 Soleman said which of you will bring me her throne before they come to me in submission.
*If the meaning of arshun azeem is Empire not a throne than how can one bring the empire? If it means who will conqure the state for me than why the next line is added that before they come in my submission? Was soleman not intrested to give them time to think/ to ponder to admit Islam?
11. 27:42 it is mentioned that when saba arrived than it was said to her Is your throne like this, she said yes.
*If it is about the throne than whats all this? but if it is about state's condition and rules and regulation and saba says yes my state was like this than why did Soleman fought?
12. 27:43 it has been told that Saba would have admitted the Islam but she was expecting that her gods were help her in war. but in the end she admitted Islam.
*It means saba was admitting Divine revalation not on the basis that the divine revalation gives us a system she admitted b/c her gods did not help her and she found that God was very powerful but she did not even ponder on the issue of the system. What is it?
13. 27:44 "She was told, enter the palace".
*Were prophets living in Palaces??????
Please Sir answer these questions.
Thanks

| Mr Ali haider,i appreciate your question and research based queries here.In fact your question is the door opening of knowledge. We are waiting for Dr. sahib reply.Brother your question is so knowledge worthy that my interest in the same infact enforced me to share my comments with you if you don't mind please. My answers steps are as per you questions. 1:-In this step allama pervez version seems correct, the NAMLA is not an ant. 2:-The stories had been concoted in bani israeel so Allah clarified and removed embiguties see vese 76--78 of this surah. Also same attitude could be noticed in today's religious communities.thes all quranic stories provide lesson to each resembeling situation. 3---5:- Allama pervez's elaboration about the TAIR, HUD HUD,JINN and so on seems correct. 6:-The verse 27/23 dosn't mean that the people of the state were prosperous but state was having tremendous natureral resources with good controll and governess. The verse 27/24 also not properly elaborated,YASJUDOON AL SHAMS MIN DOON ALLAH must be under stood in its true sense,it means following the commondment of any other KINGDUM other than the commondment of ALLAH. 7--9:-Here the SAJDA must be understood, the obediency is required not the wership of Allah. The quran is witness that no any society could be prosperous if folowing the commondments MIN DOON ALLAH.All steps toword prosperous includes in islam whether knowing Allah or not.The war was imposed becouse the qoam e saba including malika was following the commondments of any other kingdum(al shams).10:-Please consolidate verse 37 and 38 which shows that this step is taken before any possible attack in lue she surrender. 11:- It means the controll and governess is same like you rs see the verse27/32. 12:- her attitude looks like muslim from the very begining, see verse 32,34--35, she was enforced by her qoom (or circumstances) to obey the commandments of some supper KINGDUM(alshams) see the verse 27/43. 13:- Yes there is no restriction to nabi to live in palace. These were my humble opinions regarding your queries.May Allah bless you. | |

| Dear Ali Haider, Salam-o-alaik.
Your questions actually covers the complete Sura. It needs translation of the Sura from beginning to the end. I will try to answer all your questions.
1….. You have asked about نمل.
The meanings of its root letter is, a traveler who does not stay at a place, always on the move, restless, Ants are also called نملہ because they are always on the move. At this place the gypsy tribes are called نملہ
2…..Why past history is narrated?
Quran brings its reasons to substantiate its claims:
a) Historical evidences to prove its claims
b) Observation of universe,
c) Study of human nature.
3…..What is منطق الطیر
16. and Sulaimân inherited Dawûd He said: "O mankind! we have been taught the language of birds, and on us have been bestowed All things. This, Verily, is an evident blessing"
You can see clearly that faculty of understanding Language of Birds was not only given to Sulaiman but to all mankind, which clearly shows that الطیر does not mean birds but it is a simile like in Urdu we call the most intelligent and active person شاھین. Allama Iqbal has used the word for learned people.
4….. Who was ھدھد ?
To decide who was ھدھد we have to see the situation in which the word ھدھد has appeared.
There was a tension about a war. ھدھد was absent when the meeting was going on. His absence was noted. The meeting was so important that his absence was punishable, or suspension.
"I will surely Punish Him with a Severe torment, or slaughter him, unless He brings Me a clear reason.”
He brought some information which lead Sulaiman to pardon him. He seems to be head of the secret service.
5…..Why Solaiman attacked a welfare state without a reason ?
This is a misconception! The first sentence of the letter shows that forces of the Saba were doing mischief’s at the border
31. "Be You not highhanded (exalted cavalier haughty) against Me, but come to Me as Muslim.”
The sentence used أَلا تَعْلُوا عَلَيَّ is used when a nation pressurizes its neighbors by using its force. It looks from the context as if some border clashes were going on to pressurize the Sulaiman’s state.
Although there is no mention of any War in between the two nations but keeping in mind verse 17 one can ask few question,
i) Why the army was called ?
ii) Why the gypsy tribe was afraid of being crushed by Sulaiman and his army ?
iii) Why ھدھد was sent for spying ?
iv) Why She was told
So the misconception that War was waged by Sulaiman for no purpose is wrong. It was the army of Saba which was already provoking the neighboring nation.
6….You are still using the word believing instead of accepting peace.
Note a Muslim is the one who practices ways of safety and Momin is the one who provides peace to others. They were not Muslim means they were not implementing or practicing way of life of peace and safety.
Actually both the words used i.e. تَعْلُوا and مُسْلِمِينَ are for male gender in plural form. That’s why I have used words of male gender in the above explanation.
7…. عرش
عرش Means اقتدار and in verse 38 أَيُّكُمْ يَأْتِينِي بِعَرْشِهَا means simply “ who can control the state for me.”
8…. In verse 42
42. So when she came, it was said (to her): "Is Your Throne like this?" she said: " as though it were the very same."
In this verse state of Saba was shown to them after amendments and were asked whether they can observe the difference, They accepted yes.
9….. You have asked Whether Prophets live in Palaces ?
The answer has two parts:
a) Concerning Palace in General ( Define Palace ) and then we will discuss who can live in palace and who can not.
b) The word translated for Palace is الصرح with " ص ر ح " root letters the meanings of the root letters are to remove doubts to expound Clearly, speak distinctly and one of the meaning is castle.
Basically the nation of Saba was provocative and causing trouble for Sulaiman’s state. They were sent the book with divine guidance and were asked to live in peace which they accepted. They were then told clear and distinct orders ( الصرح )
Let me quote the final verse no 44
44. It was said to her: "Enter As-Sarh", but when she understood it, she thought it was unyielding and the matter became difficult for her Sulaimân said: "indeed, it is crystal clear details. she said:" My Lord! Verily, I have been cruel to myself, and I accept to be peaceful with Sulaiman according to divine commands the benevolent to all mankind.

| Salam Br Dr Qamar.
Excellent understanding. And same time i would like bring one more verse to shed your bright understanding.
In Sura 17 verse 59 mentioned a sentence (WA ATAINA SAMUDA NAQATA) what i understand here NAQAT means Allah's Book because after NAQATA MUBSIRATAN came, As per Quran MUBSIRATAN means clear evidneces. then How come Camel become clear evidence. You are the right person to give better interpretation.

| The legendary myth of King Solomon and Queen Sheba at long last evaporated into air and the story put on a new garb of rational reality. Yet another great discovery that Quran brought into light.
May He bless Dr. Qamar Zaman with health and lots of energy so that the process of purifying the Quranic interpretations may continue unabated. The whole world may soon witness the crystal clear image of Quranic Guidance.
I second the apprehensions of Brother Abdullah BaShoib re. NAAQATAN MUBSIRATAN (17/89).

| Dear Ali haider regards, this is in continuation of my comments on your question regarding SURAH AL NAMAL.If verse 27/23 means prosperous nation as mentioned in verse 34/15 then verse 34/16 shows the reason "FA AARAZO" this is why suleman(pbuh) sent soldiers troops (imposed war),the words used "fa arsalna alaihim sail al aram" means we sent heavy troops of army, so the prosperity which they had been enjoying had lost. | |
