Muslims have been procrastinating in understanding the Qur’an for 1000 years. They ignore TASREEF-il-Ayaat (looking at all the verses on a given subject) and keep complaining that the Book does not describe this and that. Even the Arabs try to understand the Qur’an through ancient tafseers written by the Persians centuries after the exalted Prophet. As a result, we Muslims try to understand the Book through Ajami/Persian meanings. Translations of the Qur’an in any language are hampered for the same reason. None but Allama G.A.P. reverted to “Arabi Mubeen” or the Quraish dialect in which the glorious Book was revealed to Muhammad (S). If we understand the Qur’an through Arabic Mubeen, we get a beautiful and comprehensive Big Picture of the Book and that helps us answer such questions as yours. Please note that the word HARAM has not been used even against Alcohol, but the prohibition uses much stronger words. 5:91 By means of intoxicants and games of chance Satan, your rebellious and selfish desires, incites you to enmity and hatred among you and hinders you from being conscious of God and following the Divine System. Will you not then abstain? [2:219] Now about smoking: 1 - Even before we knew about the devastating effects of smoking on human health, discerning Muslims must have noted that it gives rise to chronic irritation of the nose and throat, frequent sneezing, snoring, disturbs sleep, causes chronic cough and phlegm. All this becomes a nuisance to the smoker, his family and friends. 2 - Fitness problem: How many top athletes have you seen who smoke cigarettes? 3 - Has not the world seen the smokers shortening their lives? 4 - The smoke has a very disagreeable smell to those around. 5 - How many a bedding, rooms and homes and occupants in the world have been burned due to cigarettes! 6 - Shortness of breath, palpitation, dizziness, fatigue and frequent respiratory infections caused by smoking have been known for at least two centuries. 7 - A smoker, by way of addiction, becomes more of a slave of cigarettes, his desire, than of the Creator. 8 - Smoking has been a big money waster for all, but it has especially hurt the poor. 9 - The innocent family of a smoker shares all the damages mentioned above. 10 - Deprive a smoker of his cigarettes for a couple of hours and he won’t be able to concentrate. His condition is like that of a drunk person; think of KHAMR. A SMOKER UNDER WITHDRAWAL IS NO LESS DANGEROUS THAN AN ALCOHOLIC. 11 - Then think of the traffic and machinery accidents caused by the withdrawal symptoms. 12 - Number 10 & 11 have received no attention at all. This might be the very first attempt to do so. Many Qur’anic verses can be cited in support of banning cigarette smoking. I could add to the above points. Suffice to say, that our incompetent Ulema must have done IJTEHAD and declared smoking Forbidden. And they could do so on the authority of the Qur’an. Now that the devastating effects of smoking are widely known, Muslim governments must enforce a ban on smoking. At least the educated countries have rightly started treating a smoker as a contemptible organism I don’t mean to be harsh, but often the truth is bitter. I have left alone issues such as the pallor, sallow ashen complexion, dental staining , mouth diseases, second hand smoke, the most devastating medical harms, fetal damage etc. It is amazing to note that Muslims in the world lead others in this vice as well. For example, there are 10 Muslim smokers for one Hindu smoker in India. ON THE AUTHORITY OF THE QUR’AN, MUSLIMS MUST CONSIDER SMOKING AS HARAM. Courtesy: Dr. Shabbir
